Why We Sell Only 91 Octane Fuels for Our Marine Customers

Clear Lake Boats Marina sells ONLY 91 Octane Non-Oxygenated, Non-Ethanol fuel. Why? We understand that our customers take pride in their water crafts and want us to offer nothing less than the best. Even though it is more expensive (even for us), Ethanol fuel will attract/absorb water into gas resulting in phase separation of the fuel. Ethanol fuels rapidly absorb 50 times more water that non-alcohol gas. Although boats and their owners really enjoy the water, engines do not! Alcohol in gas is unstable with a shelf life of less than 3 months. The reality is that ethanol fuels are not safe for most marine engines. So rather than risk the cost of repairs, we have decided to offer Premium Non-Ethanol fuel only. Your engine and pocket book will say thank you in the future.

A NOTE FROM MERCURY MARINE:  Whereas it might be a worthwhile alternative for some cars and trucks, E15 gasoline is not an option for marine engines. Ethanol attracts water from condensation and the air, which in turn can wreak havoc on a combustion engine. Problems that can be precipitated by too much ethanol in fuel (and 15% is too much) include the following:

  • Corrosion of metal parts,
  • Deterioration of rubber or plastic parts,
  • Fuel permeation through rubber fuel lines, and
  • Starting and operating difficulties.

For these reasons and more, warranty coverage on a broad array of repairs and services will become void on a Mercury engine that has had fuel made up of more than 10% ethanol in its tank.

While you are refueling, be sure to stop into the Marina where we have soft drinks and snacks.
